Warbird Alley's
Reno 2002
Photo Essay

The National Championship Air Races, held each September at Reno-Stead Airport in Reno, Nevada, USA, is a chance to see highly modified (and sometimes not-so-highly modified) warbirds race around the desert at high speed and low altitude. Here's a look at some of the lesser-seen parts of the event:

Pre-race preparation and maintenance on an Unlimited-class racer involves lots of manual labor and lots of sweat.

"Furias" (Race #15), NX4434P, an R-4360-powered Hawker Sea Fury, is towed from the pits to the flight line in preparation for Saturday's Silver race.

1945 Douglas A-26C Invader N119DR (Serial #44-34313), owned by David Lane, was an enormous hit in the static display area. This bomber served for years in a fire-fighting role after its retirement from the military.
